Getting Down and Quirky in Vancouver

May 09, 2017

A city’s true merits are found in its quirky bits.

And Vancouver, BC is no exception. Looking for something different to do in your new hometown?

We’ve compiled a list of a few bizarre ways to spend your day or night, right here in your new place of residence.

  • First on our list of unusual activities is a trip to the North Vancouver Laughter Club. Classes are free (always a bonus) and its sessions are often called “laughter yoga.” These laugh courses are every weekend down at John Braithwaite Community Center. Take the sea-bus ferry, for an additional introduction to downtown Vancouver life.
  • For something completely different, ditch your reservations at the hottest new restaurant in Vancouver and check out the Friday Night Ukrainian Supper at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. The supper is held the first Friday night of each month and in addition to sampling home cooked Ukrainian favorites like pierogies, kovbasa, and holubtsi, you’re sure to meet some interesting people and hear about our city from a fresh perspective. The event is also a fundraiser, so you can feel good about your contribution going to support the congregation.
  • While you’ll find heading to a Vancouver Canucks game on any must-do list for our hometown, what you may not see is the other half of high-speed skating – roller derby. The Terminal City Roller Girls start their season in the Spring and play the fast-paced, high adrenaline sport at the Vancouver Forum, just east of downtown. While roller derby was popular all over North America in the ‘50’s and ‘60s, its popularity has waned in recent years. Not here.
