Tasting Vancouver: The Fifth Annual Hot Chocolate Festival

January 08, 2015

Happy New Year from Highland Moving Vancouver! We hope you had a fantastic holiday season. Now that 2015 is here and that whole New Year, New You thing is floating in the air like mantra molecules, we want to change up our blog posts a little bit, show a different side of us that you may not be used to, a sneak peek at our personality. And while we’re at it, we’ll talk about how cool Vancouver is and how moving companies are necessary for dreams to be realized, that they keep the flow of change going strong. So with that said, let’s talk about Vancouver.

Vancouver in 2015

Over the past few years, Vancouver has seen a sizable amount of growth, making it one of the most electrifying cities in the world and thus quite a desired location to move to. Recently, the Economist even named it the best city in the world to live. That is some high praise, but who can really blame them? At Highland Worldwide, we’re surprised that not more people are flocking to British Columbia. But before we get ahead of ourselves, I suppose we should break down what livability actually means.

By livability, most people refer to a city’s (or nation’s) political stability, healthcare, income, culture, environment, education, infrastructure, housing, climate, recreational activities, and more. That seems to be expected – ideally, no one wants to live in the dregs.

But those things feel like stats, don’t they? Just a bunch of flashy terms that make newspaper headlines – nothing that really captures the soul of a city. Instead, we should look to some of the heartwarming events that really encapsulate what Vancouver is all about. And we’re referring to chocolate.

Hot Chocolate Festival

We should start with the Hot Chocolate Festival. Yes, there’s a Hot Chocolate Festival happening in our great city, the fifth one. For 29 days, January 17 to February 14, 24 businesses (or chocstars) will have a combined 57 hot chocolate flavours available for purchase and tasting! Let’s be honest here – that’s a lot of flavour.

Big thanks to City Food Magazine for the details. The 24 chocstars participating are (in no particular ranking):

9th PARALLEL COFFEE ROASTERS + LUCKY’S DOUGHNUTS
BEL CAFE
BELLA GELATERIA + TO DIE FOR BANANA BREAD
BUTTER BAKED GOODS
CHEZ CHRISTOPHE
CHOCOLATE ARTS
CHOCOLATERIE DE LA NOUVELLE FRANCE
DIVA AT THE MET
EAST VAN ROASTERS
FRENCH MADE BAKING GEM
CHOCOLATES GLENBURN SODA FOUNTAIN & CAFE
KOKO MONK CHOCOLATES LAST CRUMB CAFE
MINK CHOCOLATES & CAFE
SCHOKOLADE ARTISAN CHOCOLATE
SOIRETTE MACARONS & TEA
THIERRY CHOCOLATERIE PATISSERIE CAFE
THOMAS HAAS
UVA WINE BAR + BITTERED SLING

Consider this the Winter Olympics of chocolate. Most, if not all of us, have a sweet tooth. It’s a fun adventure figuring out what flavour scratches it the best – what hot chocolate best suits you. It’s a good thing to know and some of Vancouver’s tastiest businesses will help you figure it out! Of course, this event is about chocolate and sweetness (we mean, it’s in the name of the festival!), but we think that, in addition to the plethora of hot chocolate to be sampled and tasted, participants are also sampling and tasting Vancouver itself!

This isn’t simply some flowery metaphor, we really mean it. There are so many things that makes Vancouver tick, so many tasty parts to the collective whole that the city needs to be sampled from time to time. What better way to do that than experience the many chocstars the city has to offer, each one representing a different slice of that Vancouver pie, whether it be the neighborhood, service, or clientele.

Below is a Hot Chocolate Festival video from last year:

At Highland Worldwide, we encourage you to check out the links to the different chocstars, as they are a nice representation of what Vancouver is all about. If you’re visiting Vancouver between January 17 and February 14, you best check out the Festival. And if you reside in the city? Well, you know how exciting these things can be! If you’re considering moving here, the festival and this time of the year is especially scrumptious. And remember, Highland Worldwide is Vancouver’s premier moving company, so give us a shout if you’re looking to relocate to the city of chocstars.
