Packing a Moving Essentials Box

August 21, 2019

Although an “essentials box” should be the last thing you pack on the truck when moving, the list of supplies to pack within should be one of the first things you create as you begin preparing for the big move. Whether you are moving across town or across the country, moving can be a stressful and overwhelming experience.

When you’ve finally arrived at your new home and have finished bringing boxes and furniture inside, the last thing you want to do is rummage around to find essentials like toilet paper and your toothbrush. When packing your essentials box, the general rule of thumb is to load it up with everything you really need during the first 24 hours in your new home.

Some families choose to have an essentials box for each room of the house, but we recommend having just one. This will allow you to bring it with you in your vehicle, preventing it from disappearing in the controlled chaos that is moving. Here’s what you need to pack!

Bathroom Necessities

After an exhausting day of moving, being able to quickly find the soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and toilet paper will make life a heck of a lot easier.

If you have some extra space, a couple towels, shampoo and the shower curtain will make the first morning in your home a lot more pleasant as well – especially if you have a group of grumpy teens.

Dinner Essentials

Instead of worrying about cooking a big meal the first night in your new home, order some takeout and relax! To make this even easier to do, add some paper plates, napkins and plastic cutlery to your essentials box to make cleanup a breeze.

Moving with children? Pack a couple boxes of fruit snacks, crackers and breakfast bars to munch on throughout the busy moving day.

Cleaning Supplies

Your essentials box should also include anything that’s going to make unpacking easier.

Make sure you’ve got all-purpose cleaner, paper towels or dishrags, garbage bags, scissors, a first-aid kit, a portable tool kit, a radio and all of your important documents (passports, insurance, licenses, etc.) on hand. This way, you can get right to work after a good night’s sleep in your new home.

Entertainment

Whether it’s a favorite board game, a deck of cards or a DVD you can watch on your laptop, pack something in your essentials box to provide you and your family some entertainment before bed.

Coloring books and crayons are another great choice for young children and can keep them busy for a couple hours in the morning while the adults continue unpacking!

Once your essentials box is packed, load it into the back seat of your car or let Highland Worldwide hold it in the cab of the moving truck. Call us today at 604-581-2300 to get your move done the right way!
