Hate Moving? Hate it Less With These Hacks

April 15, 2018

When the time comes closer and closer to your move out date, the thought of packing everything up can be daunting. Putting all of your belongings into boxes just to unpack them and reorganize days later isn’t anyone’s favorite activity, but we have several amazing moving tips for you to help make the move easier than you ever thought was possible.

Check out these moving hacks and get started as soon as you can:

  • Take the clothes that are hanging up in your closet and slide a garbage bag around a bunch of them and lay them on top of boxes or in the back of your car. This will make unpacking a breeze since all you will have to do is cut the bag off and hang back up in your new closet.
  • Do you have seasonal clothing? Vacuum seal them to take up less space and to help make packing a breeze.
  • Color-code your boxes with different colors of duct tape or color coded dot stickers so you know exactly where everything goes.
  • Use suitcases for your heavy items. The handle and wheels will make it an easy transportation.
  • When dismounting electronics, take a photo of how the wires look when they are all connected so you can remember where they go when putting it back together.
  • Pack a separate bag for all of your essentials you will need within the first few days because chances are you won’t be able to unpack everything on your first day in the new house or apartment. By doing this, everything you need for one or two nights will be easily accessible.
  • Find free moving boxes on Craigslist in the “free” section or ask for boxes from your local grocery store, they often have several leftovers and you will most likely need all of the boxes you can get your hands on.
  • Speaking of boxes, when it comes to labeling your boxes, label them on the side and not on the top. This way when you begin to stack them you will always be able to see what’s inside.
  • When you begin to pack your kitchen up, stack your ceramic plates vertically (like records so they will be less likely to break) with Styrofoam plates between one another. This is an easy and cheap way to make sure your plates don’t break during the move.
  • If you are planning on taking bottles of liquid such as cleaning supplies, shampoo etc., cover the bottles with plastic wrap before putting the top on to avoid messy explosions.
  • Cut two holes in cardboard boxes to make handles to make the moving easier. Be sure the boxes you are cutting have strong enough cardboard.
  • Create a moving plan in advance, so you know when and how you will pack each room. This will help you stay on track and be less overwhelmed the day of.
  • As you begin to move, take regular breaks so you don’t wear yourself out or get too overwhelmed.
